  • Dear Grandfather

1990scb  1990 was the year our son took a job in Houston TX.  He needed money of course for an apartment and utilities. He had figured out how much he would need and we didn't have it.

A call went out to my dad for a loan.  He got it so once moved this is how he paid dad back, he wrote to them.  Not just a check but a letter. My mom saved them and some time after dad died I got them.  I want to share.

    Dear Grandfather,

Well I've got good news and bad news. So I'll give you the bad news first. I can't start paying you back until next month. You see, because of when I started my new job, I'll only be getting 3 paychecks this month. But starting in Feb. you'll be getting $100 a month until I pay off what I owe.

Now on to better subjects. My job is going great. I live about 10 min away from the office in a nice complex so I'm in the neighborhood. I usually eat at home. I've got my own company truck and my day usually runs from 7 am - 6pm.

I've enclosed a company directory to show you where I work. As you can tell it's a fairly large company. This is just a list of management. I've got weekly staff meetings at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesdays.

I usually leave the office about 8 or 8:30 and go out and troubleshoot problems, write bid proposals, make minor repairs or adjustments. Then go back to the office and write up the invoices for the days work.

I've got a pager and I'm on call 24 hrs. a day. I had my first emergency Sat. morning when a 2" main line got ran over by a semi. Talk about a mess. I turned off the water and made the necessary repairs. Monday I'll go back and turn the system on.  In all I've put in about 60 hrs. this week.  But because I'm salary I don't get overtime.  Believe it or not I don't mind. I don't know anyone in Houston, so I don't have anything to do anyway.

Well, take care and I'll be in touch.   Love, Scott

On the Directory he is listed in:  Irrigation Department and pager listing.

He did pay his Grandad back.  I found the picture above of his office and the calendar on the wall shows Feb. 1990.  He always wanted to spend a summer with his Grandad on the farm but never got the chance. He was familiar with the farm from childhood when we spent a couple weeks there.  The farm had over 600 blueberry 'bushes'.

He printed all his letters, some are harder to read as he printed like he did on architectural drawings.
