Files and more files
We have two file cabinets in this house and when Scott died Wil took his so now there are 3. He has complete control of it as even sitting on a chair it kills my back. His filing system he spends an enormous amount of time with. He set it up one time numerical. I asked how I was to find anything by numbers. So more time was spent going back to names. There is to much being saved in my opinion and now yesterday we discovered we can't find the deed to the house daughter is living in. It is still in our name, so it is our house.
This started yesterday when I wanted to go up to the Safe Deposit Box and look for some personal papers. Oh no he had them here in the file cabinet. So all morning he spent going through the files and brought the papers and their duplicates to me. Well I still wanted to go make a list of what is in that box, our memories aren't good enough. Turns out all the papers he had are duplicates, originals in the safety deposit box.
Made our lunch, rested some after being on my feet so long as it had torn up my back cooking. Then we would of headed out immediately but once again he lost his wallet. That strikes terror in my heart. He didn't realize he has not driven since last week. Eventually I found where he laid it on the shelf outside his closet. Probably had it in his hand when he went in for a shirt.
I hate the little closet viewing room and should of ask the lady for a chair for him. I went through every folder but now I need to go back up by myself. It wasn't until I got home and was typing up the list that I realized the deed wasn't written down. One folder has her medical POA and HIPPA but was the deed in between and I overlooked it?
I will have to call the District Clerks Deed Records department to find out what we must do to replace it. I doubt that is going to be easy and the office is right in the middle of down town which neither of us drive any more. Their is a taxi bill unless we can find a friend to drive us. So before doing all that I'm going back up to re-check that box.
Lesson, clean out the two file drawers, oh wait it is really one that is mine in the big file cabinet. Also check the little lock box in Wil's closet. Doubt it is there but now days can't count on anything.

@fauquet: If I am learning one thing Michel I should of paid more attention as now I'm not much help and some day it will totally be in my hands. In the meantime he can putter in those files all he wants. I doubt anything he tosses in the trash will be something I need now.
For me, Bonnie, the papers and their classifification always have been the hell! Fortunateley Janine owns the art to put each thing at its place and find it again easily!
Love
Michel
Well Sandy we usually do short form on IRS so all these receipts from way back need the trash bin. LOL
I'm glad you found a way to get a copy of the deed without having to go downtown.
The cancelled check is proof of payment. But I keep the more important receipts because I can't always remember what each check was for - even if I write in the notes section. Also, for certain tax deductions, it's good to have copies of receipts.
I got on the phone with the Deed Records dept. this morning. I have the book and page number and just put a check in an envelope this morning. With a self addressed envelope for the return. Not required to go down there.
Sounds like you have had some busy days Bonnie. I know I'm not as sharp as I used to be. Spend a lot of time hunting for stuff !!! But you have each other and that's a blessing
@murisopsis: Daughter told me once a bill is paid you don't need that copy, you have it in the check book, they have a copy. I think our problem has been, what's really important? Didn't help that I ran a non profit and he said all that stuff for tax purpose, 7 yrs.
That sounds like an ordeal! I used to keep everything - even receipts for McDonalds. Over the years I figured out that I only need the important stuff. There was a free shred day at the university several years ago and I got rid of a ton of stuff... Hope you can find the deed and avoid the hassle of a taxi and the replacement fees!
